My Recycled Greyhound

Some people think that greyhounds are working dogs that enjoy the hunt after a mechanical rabbit, and at the end of her exciting career became a family pet recycling - a beautiful life with the ultimate retirement. However, this is simply not the way the story goes, and in the case of my repurposed greyhound, he just plays the odds.

The real story is the life of a greyhound is not even close to Nice. If placed on the track, they spend about 20 hours of the day confined in small cageshardly big enough for her to get up or turning around. If their statistics are below average, they are retired from racing. A retired women may end up as breeding, spending years on a farm, breeding more potential riders. Some retired at the end in veterinary research laboratories, because greyhounds have a universal blood type and because they are so docile, they are easy to handle. The lucky to get adopted, and the rest will be destroyed.

More than 15,000 greyhounds were registered in 2009 (1). More were born, butI lost have been culled as they are not suitable for racing. Many suffer legs or the neck, spinal cord paralysis, broken or go into cardiac arrest during the race and must be euthanized. Some states do not require that records of injuries or deaths, which is considered to be well kept too much information to the public. The industry has to admit, however, destroying thousands of greyhounds every year, estimated as many as in 3000 (2).

I was shocked when I recently read that greyhounds testedpositive for cocaine at a track in Birmingham. It is for my own head got this act of cruelty hard. My husband took me to our local track to see the business first hand. What I saw was mostly shady characters that are likely to gamble their "job" and a few semi-normal people just looking for something different on a Saturday could consider have to do tonight.

Thanks but for the tireless efforts GREY2K USA, a nonprofit group by the talented Christine Dorchak, directed, serves as President and General Counsel, only 23 tracks are still in 7 states: Alabama 3 tracks, Arizona has one, an operational Arkansas, Florida 13, Iowa has two, one Texas, West Virginia and 2 Gone are the titles recently in Colorado, Kansas, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Iceland and Oregon.

This amazing group has greyhound racing through cooperation with government policy, the Greyhound Protection Act banning pass "while he simultaneously tries to keep trackLiving with subsidies and tax breaks, or the back door approach, save for the developer for a law to legalize slot machines to the live race lobby. If the title to be successful at getting slots, they remain economically viable and the dogs remain available raw materials.

Defeating dog track owner is not an easy task. It has to collect the hard approach based on thousands of signatures to place a measure to end dog racing in front of voters. The people were represented stateRecords documenting hundreds of injuries, along with current video footage of horrific collision that are common occurrence and photos of the endless confinement greyhounds endure. This hard evidence gave the Greyhounds a voice. And the number and power of the people, the small groups of people can bring about big change really proved.

Currently, there are dedicated to see a blogger that this last remaining length in Arizona http://www.endtucsongreyhoundracing.com/blog/ closed. Youdescribes the problems associated with this industry in no uncertain terms. There is also something like 350 greyhound rescue groups in the U.S. by volunteers, to find ways to transport, feed, consisting of medical treatment, home and market the dogs to the public. When a track closes, these groups network in an effort to place over dogs States. You can use the constant work involved to imagine even make a dent in the number of greyhounds need homes in a state like Florida with a fabulous 13Tracks. What this says about my state of Florida? Gambling trumps animal welfare?

I was initially discouraged to hear that my local rescue group was race neutral, but then it occurred to me that they do with ruthless people and that is their way to make saves in the. I'd go with the experience of the members of a rescue group to pick up dogs as space became available. We went to a kennel, which was full of all these beautiful dogs in all their wonderful colorsstacked in boxes, with their almost human eyes were so tense at us as if to say, "please pick me." It was heartbreaking to leave but two, and no one can convince me that a different group, arrived to pick up that particular kennel rest.

My Greyhound Buddie, who raced for a short time under the name Mr. pibb is recycled an amazing dog. He is gentle and loving and gives hugs Standing, if allowed. He is an ambassador for his race with his charm to get hugs and kisses byPeople everywhere he goes. Most tend to think greyhounds are full of energy, but the truth is it around and be used, active for only a short time. Other things that people usually do not know of, is that greyhounds do not bark, they have a sweet odor and shed little, they walk by your side on a leash to enjoy and many cats. What more could you ask for in a pet?
