Fastelavn - A Danish festival for the whole family

Fastelavn up is a popular holiday destination in Denmark and most children like the Americans during Halloween dressed up and gather for the popular game "SLAA Katten af Toender. Learn more about Fastelavn and why it is so popular.

Danes celebrate Fastelavn 14th February 2010 The holiday comes seven weeks before Easter and has been described as a Nordic Halloween as children dress up in costumes. It is a time for family fun and games, of which thetraditional SLAA katten af Toender ("hit the cat out of the barrel"). This is similar to a grab bag, decorated with the exception of sweets in a large drum with a picture of a cat. (In the Middle Ages a live cat would be placed in a barrel, and the run was beaten with sticks until they broke and the cat escaped.

It was then chased out of town, because people believed that evil spirits and bad luck to take the city.) Children take turns hitting the barrel with a woodenClub. The one who bottom of the barrel hits hard enough so that all the candy spill out kattedronning ("Queen of Cats") and the child who knocks down the last piece of the barrel is katte konge ("King of Cats").

Another activity is Fastelavn from door to door singing in the neighborhood and collect candy or money, just go to the American tradition of trick or treating "on Halloween. Many cities in Denmark have Fastelavn festivals and parades.

In the earlyFastelavn days marked the beginning of a period of fasting. It was the day when you are ready for fasting (Lent) by eating as much as possible. In Denmark, a popular baked good associated with the tag Fastelavnsbolle, round cream roll a mostly covered ice filled with cum.
